Washington, D.C. | August 31 2023 | Research Grants to Identify Effective Community-Based Strategies for Overdose Prevention (R01) (RFA-CE-24-013) | The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC, Injury Center) is soliciting investigator-initiated research to partner with communities to develop and rigorously evaluate the effectiveness of new, innovative, under-developed, or untested community-based strategies/interventions/programs/practices to reduce overdose. Strategies/interventions/programs/practices may include, but are not limited to, those that focus on preventing drug use initiation and drug use, reducing non-infectious harms related to drug use, reducing stigma or other barriers to harm reduction or substance use disorder treatment, and increasing linkage to and retention in care. Research should focus on groups experiencing disproportionate burden of overdose and/or groups that are at greater risk of experiencing adverse outcomes related to substance use. Washington, D.C. | August 29 2023 | Initiative to Maximize Research Education in Genomics: Diversity Action Plan (PAR-22-268) | The purpose of this Notice is to alert the community that NHGRI plans to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to transform NHGRIs Diversity Action Plan (R25 Clinical Trials Not Allowed) to better align with more recent NHGRI and NIH-wide efforts to increase workforce diversity. Individuals from diverse backgrounds are needed to address research challenges and opportunities in genome sciences, genomic medicine, genomics and society, data science, and health equity research. The National Institute on Drug Abuse intends to establish the Justice Community Overdose Innovation Network (JCOIN) using the cooperative agreement mechanism. Cook County, Ill. | August 17 2023 | Cook County investing $10 million to help businesses cut pollution | Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on Thursday announced the funding for the Businesses Reducing Impact on the Environment, or BRITE, program. It is available to dry cleaners, auto body and repair shops, metal finishers, and food and beverage manufacturers in suburban Cook County. The county has allocated $4 million for free onsite assessments to identify ways businesses can reduce pollution. Assessments will look for ways to reduce energy and water usage, increase waste diversion from landfills, reduce the use of toxic chemicals, and determine whether a location is suitable for onsite renewable energy. Cook County, Ill. | August 14 2023 | Cook County Board Announces Block Grant Initiative to Support the Success of Community Based Organizations in Cook County | Cook County announced the Starting Block Grant initiative designed to provide capacity building resources and support to community-based nonprofit organizations serving Cook County residents. Cook County Starting Block Grants will support small organizations looking to build internal capacity and develop their infrastructure to promote organizational health, growth and sustainability. This initiative goes beyond traditional grants for organizations to deliver services and allows them to focus on strengthening how they run. Springfield, Ill. | August 8 2023 | Pritzker Administration Announces $10M in Grants to Strengthen Mental Health Services in Schools | Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced the State of Illinois is accepting grant applications from schools and agencies that support child and adolescent health for a share of $10 million in federal funding intended to strengthen mental health services for students across Illinois. The funding from the CDC’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding program is being offered to help schools and local agencies improve student care in areas such as workforce enhancements, developing frameworks to prevent adverse childhood experiences, interventions to assist children suffering from trauma, and training for medical and school staff to expand adolescent mental health resources. Washington, D.C. | August 28 2023 | VA on track to house 38,000+ homeless Veterans in 2023, awards $1B in grants to help homeless and at-risk Veterans | Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it has permanently housed 26,470 Veterans through July 2023, on pace to exceed its goal of housing 38,000 homeless Veterans in 2023. VA also announced more than $1 billion in grants to help homeless and at-risk Veterans through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families and Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem programs. These grants are a critical part of VA’s efforts to provide housing for Veterans in collaboration with the community.

  • Among Illinois recipients for the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) grant is A Safe Haven Foundation (ASHF) in North Lawndale, a client Historia Research LLC proudly supports. ASHF will receive nearly $4 million in funding during the grant period. The SSVF grant will allow ASHF to provide crucial transitional and permanent housing solutions for Veterans and Veteran families in Chicago who are at risk of or literally experiencing homelessness (Categories 1, 2, or 3).

Washington, D.C. | August 2023 | IL Discretionary Funding Fiscal Year 2023: A Safe Haven Foundation | A Safe Haven Foundation (ASHF), one of the largest transitional housing providers in Chicago, proposes to create an onsite Integrated Behavioral Health Center at its main facility in order to increase capacity and expand services for people experiencing homelessness. The Integrated Behavioral Health Center will include clinical treatment for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), Co-Occurring Disorders (CODs), and mental health counseling, as well as primary care and pharmacy services. The geographic catchment area is All Chicago Continuum of Care (IL-510).

C. | August 30 2023 | Biden-Harris Administration Invests $266 Million to Help Rural Business Owners, Farmers and Ranchers Lower Energy Costs, Generate Income, and Expand Operations, as Part of Investing in America Agenda | U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA is awarding $266 million in loans and grants to agriculture producers and rural small businesses to make investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency improvements that will lower their energy costs, generate new income, and strengthen the resilience of their operation. Champaign-Urbana, Ill. | Aug 29 2023 | Illinois Innovation Network awards inaugural manufacturing grant | The Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) and Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) announced today the recipient of their first Manufacturing Extension Partnership grant. The funding, from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is intended to focus on program development and sector analysis for small and medium manufacturers in Illinois. he funded project, led by Northern Illinois University assistant professor Niechen Chen, will combine manufacturing and inspection processes into a single collaborative robot platform to reduce setup and maintenance complexity, as well as the amount of workforce training needed to implement and operate the robots.

Springfield, Ill. | August 25 2023 | Sec. of State announces over $27M in grants for libraries, adult literacy programs | Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced Friday that he awarded over $27 million in grants aimed at helping libraries and adult literacy programs. More than 140 recipients will receive parts of $21.4 million for library services and $5.7 million to support adult literacy programs. “As State Librarian, it’s a privilege to provide these resources to support and enhance local library services and adult literacy programs across Illinois,” said Giannoulias. “Without properly funding programs, staff and educators, learning is difficult. These grants have the ability to position individuals for success and change lives by serving the unique needs of local communities.”

Springfield, Ill. | August 23 2023 | Gov. Pritzker Announces Federal Grant Supporting Tradeswomen in Illinois | Governor JB Pritzker joined Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Julie Su, representatives from the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL), and Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT) to announce a $1.35 million federal grant to the Illinois Department of Labor. This funding will go towards supporting tradeswomen-led efforts to train and support the entry of more women into infrastructure and construction careers…This grant will allow CWIT to provide specific guidance on program design and best practices to construction companies, unions, public bodies, and other stakeholders to promote workforce equity on infrastructure projects.

Springfield, Ill. | August 22 2023 | Governor Pritzker Announces Recipients of Megasites Investment Program | Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) today announced the recipients of the Megasites Investment Program funded through Rebuild Illinois Capital Funds. Through the program, the state will leverage $23 million in grants to generate $144 million total investments in 9 projects across the state. Megasites are large, developed sites ready for occupancy for manufacturers, distribution centers, industrial centers, and more. Investing in megasites develops underutilized areas and former industrial sites, while making the State more competitive for large-scale industrial investments.

Springfield, Ill. | August 21 2023 | Illinois volunteers, stewardship grant winners announced | The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recognized its 2023 Outstanding Volunteers of the Year and 2023 Natural Areas Stewardship Grant awardees Saturday. Awardees include Quad-City region recipients. IDNR annually recognizes individuals and members of outdoor organizations for their volunteer service to the department and its mission to manage, conserve and protect Illinois’ natural, recreational, and cultural resources. IDNR’s Natural Areas Stewardship Grant program provides grants to conservation land trusts around the state to increase stewardship on dedicated Illinois nature preserves and registered land and water reserves. This year, IDNR will award nearly $750,000 in grants to 11 organizations.

Springfield, Ill. | August 19 2023 | Illinois to put $20 million toward grants for grocers, research into food insecurity | Communities across Illinois that lack access to nearby stores that sell high quality food may soon see change. Gov. JB Pritzker on Friday signed a bill that sets up a program to distribute $20 million for grants and technical assistance for grocery stores as well as funding research into food insecurity. The grants will go to grocery stores that are independently owned, including for-profit and nonprofit organizations, co-ops and grocery stores owned by units of local government.

Rockford, Ill. | August 14 2023 | $1.2M in ‘Back to Business’ grants headed to Rockford area | Local restaurants and hotels in and around Rockford will receive more than $1.2 million in funding through the Back to Business grant program to help facilitate a recovery. ”We are still feeling the impact around the state from the troublesome years of the pandemic,” Sen. Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) said. “Through this program, we have delivered funding to businesses around the state in an effort to bounce back from the pandemic, and with today’s investment, we are showing local restaurants that Illinois has their back.” The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) awarded at least $535 million to more than 15,000 businesses since 2020.

Joliet, Ill. | August 11 2023 | USF’s Leach College of Nursing Receives $1.35M in ANEW Grant Funding | The University of St. Francis (USF) Leach College of Nursing (LCON) was recently notified it was approved for another Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will award the university approximately $1.35M over four years to help increase access to quality health and behavioral health care for underserved and rural areas in Illinois—especially in Will, Grundy and Cook counties. The project will build upon USF’s previous ANEW grant and will support the training and graduation of Family Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners who will practice in underserved areas.

Chicago, Ill. | August 10 2023 | ComEd, Elevate, Illinois Green Alliance Win $4.5 Million Federal Infrastructure Grant to Support Building Decarbonization in Illinois | ComEd, Elevate, and Illinois Green today announced that a proposal to expand building electrification in Illinois has been selected for a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The grant award, made possible by the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), will support the launch of a new Chicago building performance Hub, a collaboration by ComEd, Elevate, Illinois Green Alliance and state and local partners to advance more sustainable building practices across Illinois.  The building performance Hub will provide advisory services to building owners and contractors, supporting them on compliance with advanced energy codes and building policies, such as building electrification. ComEd will serve as a technical advisor on the project, investing $500,000 to stand up programs over the next three years.

At-home test receives $3 million grant |Developed by Northwestern University researchers, the tests use cell-free biosensors and a single-drop water sample to provide an easy-to-read positive or negative result for a variety of contaminants. The pilot study will follow a phased roll-out. The test for lead is already available and will be distributed later this year. A test for copper will be distributed during the second or third year of the study. And a test for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which is still in development at Northwestern, will be available in the fourth year. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded the study a $3 million grant, announced today, through its “Using the Rules of Life to Address Societal Challenges” program.

Springfield, Ill. | August 4 2023 | Southern Illinois communities get millions for improving infrastructure and housing rehabilitation | Millions of dollars are coming to various Southern Illinois cities to help with infrastructure and housing rehabilitation thanks to a Community Development Block Grant. Governor JB Pritzker, along with the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), announced the communities who are receiving the grants on Friday. A total of $56.9 million was awarded for 54 public infrastructure and housing rehabilitation projects throughout Illinois. These grants are aimed to help enable communities in non-metropolitan areas to make critical repairs to water, sewer, and drainage infrastructure which will enhance safety and quality for area residents.

Washington, D.C. | August 4 2023 | Durbin, Duckworth Announce $14.7 Million in Federal Grant Funding for Illinois EPA | U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced a total of $14,772,472 in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grants for Illinois EPA (IEPA). The funding, split across two separate grants, will support IEPA’s mission to provide a clean, livable environment and clean air and water sources forIllinoisans…EPA’s Performance Partnership Grant awarded $14,768,317 in federal funding to IEPA, which will go toward streamlining IEPAoperations and strengthening the partnership between EPA and the state. The funding will also support statewide programs within the Bureaus of Air, Water, and Land, including conducting inspections, issuing permits, reporting data, monitoring air and water quality, and taking enforcement actions.

Cook County, Ill. | August 4 2023 | Cook County announcing $8 million for transportation projects | Cook County is handing out about $8 million for communities to work on transportation projects. On Friday, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle will announce which projects will be funded by the Invest in Cook Grant program. The program works to improve transit, pedestrian and bike paths along with road and freight transportation. The program has funded more than 240 projects since 2017.

Springfield, Ill. | August 3 2023 | Gov. Pritzker Joins State, Local Leaders to Call for Federal Investments in Chicago Hub Improvement Program | The Chicago Hub Improvement Program aims to secure a $872.8 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal/State Partnership Program, made possible by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The funding will advance a multitude of regional improvements, resulting in better performance for travelers in the Midwest and across the country. As Amtrak’s top national priority, the projects will expand capacity, eliminate bottlenecks, and improve air quality, accessibility, reliability, and customer experience for more than 30 million passengers annually. Demonstrating the program’s widespread support, grant applicants with Amtrak include the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Chicago Department of Transportation, Cook County, Metra, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the Michigan Department of Transportation, which are contributing a combined $218.2 million toward the improvements. Grant announcements are anticipated later this year.

Franklin Park, Ill. | August 1, 2023 | $8M federal grant helps Franklin Park get started on railway safety project, officials say | Franklin Park has received some early federal grant funding as part of a project to build an underpass near railways that run through the village. Mayor Barrett Pedersen announced last month in his column in the village’s electronic newsletter that is posted on the village website that Franklin Park was awarded $8 million for a railway safety project. The money is from the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program run through the U.S. Department of Transportation. “We would be building one vehicular underpass. There is a possibility of a pedestrian underpass at a different location,” he told Pioneer Press.
